Manfred Mondays: The Playoff Problem

Manfred Mondays: The Playoff Problem

In an effort to better connect Generation Z with Major League Baseball, commissioner Rob Manfred has partnered with End of the Bench to publish a weekly column on the state of baseball, his efforts to make the game more youth-friendly, and any other general observations about the world of sports.

What’s popping #ManFam?

Your boy Rob is back, and it is hard to believe we are nearing the end of the season. I’m not looking for clout or anything, but I have been working pretty hard this year and even I need a break sometimes, cha feel?

Speaking of, I thought this would be a good opportunity to address our post-season tournament, specifically how we can change things to make things better for Generation Z.

I don’t want to get dragged for this, but I deadass think we can make some changes to better our post-season play.

Before I get into my ideas, a programming note - next Monday will be the last #ManfredMonday post here at End of the Bench, I have been so #blessed for this opportunity and look forward to coming back next SZN.

With that said, check out my playoff ideas below, and be sure to like and subscribe!

Shorter Playoffs

The easiest fix we could make is just making the playoffs much shorter, no cap. Instead of the typical five to seven-game series, every matchup will just be one winner-take-all matchup. I know some fans will be salty, but this will condense everything into one incredible week instead of being drawn out over an entire month.

More Playoff Representation

On top of making things shorter, I would love if we could be more inclusive of all our teams and different backgrounds, so next season I am going to propose that every team in the league makes the playoffs. Everybody is represented and I know we love to see that.

Fan Vote Playoffs

Personally, I think this idea slaps really hard and puts the season outcome entirely in our new fan’s hands. Instead of playing the actual games, spectators will be able to tune in live on Twitch and vote in a live poll that determines which team will move forward to the next round. The entire playoffs could be completed in one stream.

Masked Singer Playoffs

For whatever reason, you all seem to be super into masked television shows like Sexy Beasts, or the Masked Singer. While I truly do not understand the fascination, I stan with the #ManFam and will do whatever it takes to make the game more Gen Z friendly. This new playoff format will have all of the players dressing in costume and playing in front of a panel of live judges. If the judges can correctly guess which team is playing, they will move on to the next series.

No Playoffs

After thinking about all the above, the most practical solution came to mind and not to troll the league, but I for real think we should just cancel the playoffs. There’s absolutely no need to determine one winner because we are all equal and just want to have a good time, amirite?

As always, let me know what y’all think, and be sure to tune in next week for my last "Manfred Mondays" post, only on End of the Bench!
